To the woman whose smile takes up her whole face, and whose laughter—pig-like snort and all—can resound from across the room: I see you.

You, with your humor and witty jokes that no one expects and only a few understand.

You, with your unshakeable joy even in times of grief cause you know lamenting and hope can exist at the same time.

You, with your resilience finding meaning in every setback or adventure. Who adapts to each new season cause mama said you were her free-spirited child, without worry or care. You, with a confidence stolen from the man she loved deeply enough to create you.

You, little miss Jane-Of-All-Trades who is content not holding a monopoly over one skill if you can try your hand in an array of talents.

You, with your hands that braid and write and edit and bake sweet potato pies. Your hands that sew and play piano and even help you talk. You and your hands connected to arms that love a good hug and warm embrace.

You, an empath who wishes she could send those hugs to each person who feels weighed down and weary. Because even when you weep you have assurance of better days.

Much better days despite a day like today, when you may read this ode I wrote you and not feel as though you deserve one.

You, whose faith is a reminder that there are many things you have within reach to enjoy that will never let go, like grace and peace and joy and this simple but timely ode reminding you of what you said you like about yourself.
